Based on his own experience, Filip advises to avoid advertising on websites such as in the very beginning. They tend to be very expensive and when you’re new to the cleaning business, you won’t get a lot of jobs. Also, Yell may work for a smaller city but hardly for London. In addition, it does not give you the option to try it for a month. Instead, you have to buy it for the whole year. However, you can list your business on Yell for free. But when it comes to advertising, it’s best to start with less expensive websites.

The third option is to work as a subcontractor. You can look for jobs at and but you have to pay between 20{a35617fc15653e3814e2bcbba04476704e6bc197bb17b3d80dbd33208febbce0} and 30{a35617fc15653e3814e2bcbba04476704e6bc197bb17b3d80dbd33208febbce0} commission fee. There are also many other websites where you can find cleaning jobs and according to Filip, they are an excellent starting point.

The fourth option are Google Adwords. But to make the investment worthwhile, you will probably need to hire a professional to provide guidance and advice on how to make the most out of it.

The fifth option are leaflets and flyers. “They got me 10 jobs from just one building,” says Filip. However, this strategy works only if you drop leaflets and flyers directly at buildings. “Otherwise, leaflets are waste of time and money. I wouldn’t advise to simply have them dispersed around neighbourhoods,” explains Filip from the London Cleaning System.

The sixth option is hire a cold calling estate agency and offer your services. This is a very good idea if you’re specialising on end of tenancy cleaning. The only problem with this option is that it can involve deferred payment, which means you may end up waiting to get paid for a few months. Filip advices to avoid this option at the beginning, adding that “if you don’t have great standards, don’t even try.”

The seventh option is to buy a database of companies using cleaning services and offer them your services via email.

The eighth option is search engine optimisation (SEO) of your website. But it takes time before it starts yielding results – sometimes as long as a year. If you decide for this strategy, Filip recommends to focus on having it done well rather than cheap.

The ninth option is probably the most effective for small cleaning companies that are just starting out: word of mouth or recommendations from the clients. To make it work, you obviously must deliver the highest quality service at the most competitive prices possible.

“I would suggest everyone to try with most – if not all – of the above discussed options to see which one brings the best results because in the end, only results bring profits. Not everything works for everyone, so inform yourself very well about each option and try to learn as much as possible before getting started, “says Filip. “I highly recommend everyone who are starting a cleaning business to be wary of various companies offering marketing. You will get a lot of phone calls from fake companies promising to get your website on the first page on Google. Resist the temptation and just say no because they are only after your money. DO NOT fall for their promises,” advises Filip.

How much money do I need to get started?

For domestic and general cleaning you need about £1500, of which £500 for creating a website and £1000 for marketing.

For all other options, you will also need a vehicle and cleaning machine. “Don’t buy an expensive car and cleaning machine. Instead, invest most of your money in marketing which is the key if you want to succeed in this business. You can buy a better car and more powerful cleaning machine later. On average, you need about £2,000-£8,000 for a van and between £1,000-£2,000 for a second-hand cleaning machine,” explains Filip from the London Cleaning System.

As in any other business, the most important of all is to persevere. It takes time to see the results, so don’t give up!
